Ever since the Engaging for Success was published in 2009, Jo has been at the forefront of advocating for best practices in employee engagement. Employee engagement and success have grown into an important cornerstone of a successful company. While hard to define, employee success can be considered as people need to have something meaningful about their work to do the best job they can. Employee experience is the next step forward.

With the Great Resignation, people are shuffling across companies but not everyone is finding that they’re getting what they signed up for. Companies lose good people because they are not talking to everyone. Start out with the supposition that ALL CANDIDATES are good people to talk with and you’ll do a much better job with recruiting.

Important to a successful employee engagement strategy is to focus on the 4 enablers:

1. Strategic Narrative – Visible, empowering leadership providing a strong strategic narrative about the organization, where it’s come from, and where it’s going

2. Engaging Managers – who focus on their people and give them scope, treat their people as individuals, and coach and stretch their people.

3. Employee Voice – Employees are seen not as the problem, but rather as central to the solution, to be involved, listened to, and invited to contribute their experience, expertise, and ideas.

4. Organizational Integrity – the values on the wall are reflected in day-to-day behaviors. There is no ‘say–do’ gap. Promises made and promises kept, or an explanation given as to why not.

Engage for Success Radio: Employee Engagement at PivotCX

PivotCX learned a huge lesson about business when COVID-19 hit and they lost 85% of their business in March 2020. What was the surviving 15%? It corresponded to clients using the software to engage job applicants with a live person, right after they applied. Consequently, they pivoted. They rebuilt their business on the proposition that every job applicant should get to talk to a live human, every time, within minutes of applying. 

Mike and his team spent most of 2020 building new software, and a new way to recruit that puts candidate engagement front and center. They built it by working closely with the interns doing live chat for the customers that stayed on board, and by listening carefully to their customers. 

In short the Pivot worked.

The new software launched in January  2021, and PivotCX grew 183% that year. 

So far this year, fueled by the great resignation, in January and February, they’ve already beat 2021.

But… growth creates new challenges, and employee engagement at PivotCX has become crucial. Now their team shifted to growth mode. This means that the company leaders challenge employees to “give their job away” every few weeks as they scale up. Making sure every team member knows what is going on, feels valued, and important is crucial. 

Mike is a serial entrepreneur and software developer with deep experience in HR Tech. He heads up product operations and product development for PivotCX.

With AI becoming more commonplace in our working lives, we’ve seen an increase in the ease and speed with which we can roll out tools like chatbots.

Where does this leave human-to-human conversation in the recruitment process?

Do job seekers prefer talking to a bot over a human?

As Mike explains, it becomes clear pretty quickly that chatbots still have their limitations.

In contrast, chat agents, or candidate advocates, can handle 300 – 400 conversations in a day. They are easy to train and adapt quickly to changes in script and the environment.

For this reason, we see a space to nurture the human to human connection in recruiting. In turn, they hand off highly qualified candidates to recruiters.
